Notes
Record From the Back of the Main Floor, Right Side
This is a 16bit / 48KHZ recording. It cannot be burned to a cd, unless you convert it to 44.1KHZ.
The FLAC files were created using CD Wave 1.98, and they were tested using Media Monkey 3.1.1.1261.
This was a secret show, the day after Siamese Dream was released. They were listed as "The Turnips".
Tickets were only available at the door, and I think they were only $5.

Subject: Excellent "Secret" show, excellent audience recording
Subject: Excellent "Secret" show, excellent audience recording
Excellent audience recording from the same taper who also recorded the final two Metro shows a month later.
This is the first electric show since the ... release of Siamese Dream, which had come out the day before. The band had performed the acoustic record release show at Tower Records the night of the 26th, where they had advertised the upcoming secret show at the Metro. Although the 3 Metro shows in August would be considered the highlights from this period, this show at the Metro, where the band were billed as the Turnips, is actually the first proper electric record release party for their hometown crowd.
Having only performed a pair of shows earlier in the week, the performance here does have some hiccups and "still working out the kinks" elements to it. Billy's guitar goes out during Today, which causes him to mess up the subsequent verses. They stop Disarm due to crowd surfers, and they take a tuning break during the interlude in Geek USA, where Billy also spends some time to talk to the audience and chat about the Chicago scene. The band would continue to comment on the technical difficulties, and their own disorganization, several times throughout the show (before Siva, Billy even asks the audience if they have any constructive criticism about the band's performance), but it's all in good fun, and it's still a very entertaining gig, in the same spirit as the August Metro shows. Interesting to hear this first proper SD hometown show, where the band and the new album have not yet gotten the global recognition outside of Chicago. So, there isn't as much pretentiousness or confrontational attitude here. With the funny between-song banter, and the intimacy of the venue, the Pumpkins at times sound like a local bar band playing to their small core of fans. It's telling that the song at this show that gets the biggest roar of approval from the crowd isn't any of the Gish songs, or the songs from the new album, but "Drown", which the audience can be heard singing along to. The performances from August are more polished, but this initial Metro show is the laid back calm right before the storm.
From the sound of the people around the taper, as well as some of the comments that Billy makes from the stage, apparently the venue was very hot on this summer night. You can hear people in the crowd asking for water. At one point, some of the crowd around the taper comment on how good the cool air feels. For a funny moment, listen to a girl noticing the taper's microphone just before Soma.
